Food Products

Let’s start with one of my favorite bacon flavored item of all time:  Vosges Mo’s Bacon Bar.  This little slab of chocolate is infused with crispy bacon bits that makes a wonderful combination.  The ratio is just right so don’t go thinking you can melt a Hershey’s bar over bacon in your frying pan…that would be wrong.  Vosges has a Ph.D in Yumology and has applied their years of slaving away in kitchen laboratories to making the ultimate mashup of bacon and chocolate.  It’s really really good–click the image to head to the Vosges site.  They’re about $7.50 a bar on the site, but I’ve seen them for about 5 or 6 bucks at Whole Foods.

How about those times when bacon is not just that convenient to eat–think about when you’re at work and want to add a little bacon to your salad but there’s nary a gas range and iron skillet around.  Now you can get the taste of bacon anywhere you go!  It’s like having bacon in your back pocket!

Another sweet form of bacon is Dean and Deluca’s Sir Francis Bacon Peanut Brittle.  Sounds so interesting I put it on the list of things to eat the next time we head up to Napa Valley.

How about bacon in spreadable form?  If you watch the Daily Show with John Stewart, you’ll know about Baconnaise.  This is the “Lite” version.  Would I try it?  Probably–but only if they had a sample size…who the heck is going to order a 3 pack of these things?

I don’t know about you, but I think I’d prefer Skillet Bacon Jam.  It seems to be gaining ground as the premier spreadable bacon product.  MattBites.com seems to be obsessed with this stuff and it has been even been featured on The Onion.  TasteDuds.com has a quick and simple recipe for Skillet Bacon Jam Fried Rice.  MadMeatGenius drops a decently detailed review of the bacon product in question as well…he seems to like it well enough but gives it 2.5 out of 5 stars–not sure what’s up with that.  At any rate, it sounds like something I would like.  Maybe I’ll pick up a jar to make some sandwiches with.  Click on the image to head to the Skillet Street Food site.

Did I forget something?  Oh wait…what about plain old bacon?!?  That’s right, you can order bacon (just like almost everything else) over the Internet.

• iheartbacon – not updated too often, but finds some good bacon related posts when they do.
• Royal Bacon Society – these guys are REALLY into bacon.  It’s hardcore bacon lovin’ over there.  If you can follow all of their bacon related goodness and not die of a heart attack within a year, I think you may be indestructible.  This site serves as a jumping point into way too many bacon related places that I’m not going to list here…just go to the RBS and check out their blogroll.
• Bacon Haikus – this doesn’t look like it’s been updated recently which is unfortunate because haikus are one of my most favorite forms of communication.  I’m even working on a haiku resume in which every job and all of the duties I’ve had are all haikus.

So those first 3 minutes sparked my interest in fluteboxing and trying to find more of it.  I found some videos of it on youtube but they weren’t as good as Nathan.  I mean, still very impressive, but I can tell than Nathan has been doing this for a fair while and has taken quite a bit of time to hone his craft.  I decided to focus on finding more about Nathan and all I could really come up with is his myspace page–nothing out of the ordinary here: dates/locations for upcoming performances (dang, nothing in the states), and the usual myspace menagerie of bad web design.  Then I found “Belly of the Beast,” a rap song featuring Nathan “fluteboxing” and some sweet tabla drummin’…feast your ears:

So now it gets more interesting…I started thinking about what other crossover or musical explorers I’ve encountered recently.  Two immediately came to mind–cellist Rufus Cappadocia and guitarist Kaki King.  My first encounter with Cappadocia was this TED conference performance:

As you can see, everything starts out calmly enough but it REALLY gets interesting around the 1:30 mark.  This other song called “Transformation” from Rufus in on my work “in the zone” playlist:

I’ve know about Kaki King through some of her more popular works for a couple of years now, but I had no idea until recently that she was behind the “Bari Improv” song from the awful movie August Rush.  Here’s a pretty good performance from her at TED:

As you can see, it’s a another interesting “slap the string instrument” type of performance.  While I was composing this, Felicia Day tweeted about Zoe Keating, an “avant cellist” who sounds like she is straight out of the tech world which is interesting (may engineers are also musicians–I used to be one but have long since played any of my instruments).

Interesting eh?  So in closing, I bring us back to the original spark of this detour through musical entanglement: the flute.  A site called “Smoking Section” lists out the top 5 hip-hop songs with a flute in them.  They missed a favorite of mine–Beastie Boys’  “Sure Shot” (due to the corporate greed of the music companies or possibly some other reason, you’ll have to click through the video to watch on Youtube until I post up the video here in jw player):

Burger King Windows 7 Whopper

We crashed at my aunt’s house–my parents are the kind of people that don’t believe in hotels–in a place called “Jamaica.”  I thought (and still do think) that it was odd that there was a neighborhood of New York called Jamaica.  But I digress…

After getting our bearings, my aunt explained how to get to the subway station.  I hobbled down the street with my parents, hopped the bus (also a first for me at the time) and found our first subway station.  After I picked up the subway map and hopped on board, I was hooked.  New York’s subway system while a bit dilapidated is also one of the most successful systems in the world and I soon found out why.  Basically, you could get within a few minutes walk of just about anywhere you wanted to be on Manhattan island by taking the subway.  No traffic, no parking headaches, no worrying about your car getting dinged by the Minivan (SUVs weren’t popular back then yet) parked next to you.

I think at that point, I realized I was a total geek.  Well, I knew this WAY before this moment but still…New York’s subway system solidified my undying love for all things related to transit, urban design, and moving people about their day.  Ever since then, I’ve gravitated towards subways and transit systems of all sorts.  Shanghai’s is spotless and efficient.  Beijing’s is old and creaky but it works.  Bangkok’s is comfortable, quiet, and offers nice views.  London’s is crowded and awe-inspiring due to the sheer number of criss-crossing tubes there are.  Athen’s is crowded and not-airconditioned (only some trains) which is a problem in July and August–those Greeks sure have a thing about not using air-conditioning.  Los Angeles (“WTF??!–L.A. has a subway system??” you may be asking) is a little noisy, but comfortable and usually uncrowded seeing as how 90% of Angelinos barely know that buses exist in the city let alone an entire network of trains hurtling through underground tubes.  San Francisco’s very own BART is LOUD and has carpet–CARPET!.  There are probably a few others that I’ve left off the list but will no doubt wistfully remember at some future point I’m sure.

Anyway, if you’re looking for an interesting read or have a geek of your own in your care, I’m sure they’d appreciate this really nice and relatively inexpensive bit of mapping goodness.

Being the packrat that I am, I found Ian Albert’s labor of love (maybe?) quite some time ago and totally forgot about it until I started looking for goodies to drop into this site.  I know that I wanted to have a video-gamish theme and SMB is about as video-gamish as you can get right?

Ian has created a maps of the SMB levels by painstakingly screen-capturing each part of the level and then photoshopping them together.  I bow down to the absolute dedication and utter kookiness of this endeavor.  Hoorah!
